Baseball Alumni Game

Jeremy Sowers, Jensen Lewis, Cesar Nicholas, Jonathan Douillard, Worth Scott, Mike Baxter, Ulises Carbera, Anton Richardson. Those grads and others were not only in Hawkins Field Sunday, they were suited up and presented pretty good competition to the Vanderbilt varsity baseball team.

Sowers, the Cleveland Indians’ farm hand of the year last year, tossed two scoreless innings of relief. Many of the alumni will report to their respective spring training camps next week.

Local sports media personality Willy Daunic, Class of 1993, was the oldest alumnus suited up. The 104.5 The Zone co-host hit a sharp grounder to short on his first pitch from fire-balling alumni pitcher Ryan Rote.

The varsity topped the alumni, 6-2, on a cool, breezy afternoon.

You’re in the Army Now

The 81-78 victory over Kentucky Saturday made it a big day for most of the 14,000-plus in attendance but a halftime activity for about 20 area young men and women made it a day they will never forget. The group came out during intermission but instead of shooting baskets or precision dancing, they raised their right hands and were sworn in to the United States Army. They received a standing ovation both before and after taking the oath.

Georgia Game Televised

The men’s basketball game Saturday in Athens will be televised by FOX Sports South, tip time is 7:00 Central.
