2/4/2006 MADISON, Wisc — After falling in the first round of the ITA National Tournament to No. 16 TCU (3-4), the No. 7 Commodores (5-1) have earned a victory in both consolation matches. On Friday the ‘Dores defeated No. 22 BYU “We did a better job playing the third day of this competition. Every match you play is just tough, by the third day it’s really easy to get in the swing.” “We did a much better job coming out with energy and yesterday’s win helped with that,” Vanderbilt Assistant Coach Meike Babel said. The Commodores took the doubles point for the first time in the tournament against Wisconsin. The point was big win according to Babel. “We played really well in 1 and 3 doubles. We’re seeing good things in doubles and this doubles win was really important since we didn’t win yesterday.” The Commodores defeated all singles opponents in two-set matches. Amanda Fish defeated Wisconsin’s top 50 player Caitlin Burke (No. 32) in a swift 6-3, Freshman Courtney Ulery has used this tournament to prove her consistency at the No. 4 slot with another win today against Wisconsin’s Chelsea Nusslock (6- 3, 7-5), earning her third win of the tourney. Ulery is undefeated at No.4 so far this season. “Courtney is getting better by the day. She’s really thriving on the competition. When she was down in the second set it was like she just turned on a switch and took care of it,” Babel said. The Commodores are returning to Nashville on Sunday and will enjoy three days off before preparing to face MTSU on Valentine’s Day at the Currey Tennis Center. RESULTS VU 7 Wisc. 0 Singles |
