Commodores Drop Road Match at Bass-Rudd

LOUISVILLE, Kent. — The No. 39 Commodores fell 6-1 to the No. 31 University of Louisville Cardinals in their first road dual match of the season. The Cardinals improved their regular season home winning streak to 43 matches at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

Though Louisville (4-2) earned 6 match points, the Commodores (2-1) kept the sets close in seeds 1, 3, 5, and 6. Freshman Nik Cromydas took the
only victory of the night, defeating Cardinal junior Stefan Naughton 6-2, 6-2.

“Nik did a great job,” VU Head Coach Ian Duvenhage said. “He’s made a commitment to play aggressively and he really carried that out today.”

At the No. 1 seed, sophomore Ryan Preston dropped two sets that ended in tie-breakers against Slavko Radman (6-7, 6-7). Junior Andy Mack dropped his first set to senior Jakob Gustafsson (6-2), but led throughout most of the second set. Gustafsson tied the set at 5-5 and went on to take the 7-5 win.

In other singles play the Commodores succumbed to the experience of the Cardinal’s older line up. Sophomore Evan Dufaux was pitted against formerly ranked U of L junior Damar Johnson in the No. 2 seed and dropped both sets 2-6, 2-6, while junior Nathan Sachs dropped his match to senior Jeremy Clark 2-
6, 0-6.

“They played better than we did. Sometimes that’s just the outcome,” Duvenhage said. “They showed us some things we could do better so now we’re going home to work hard on it.”

The Cardinals won the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds. VU’s doubles victory came from duo Andy Mack and Evan Dufaux who defeated Cardinals Damar Johnson and Jhonny Berrido when a service ace by Dufaux ended the proset 8-6.

The next dual match for the Commodores will be back at Currey Tennis Center in Nashville against UT Chattanooga on February 10.
