Women’s Hoops Takes One From Alabama 2/2/2006
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The No. 21 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team opened a two-game Alabama road swing with a 65-53 victory over the Crimson Tide at Coleman Coliseum Thursday night. The game was close throughout, but Vanderbilt finished on a 16-0 run, holding Alabama scoreless over the final 5:40. Sophomore Liz Sherwood led all scorers with 23 points. The nation’s leader in field goal percentage made 9-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Junior Caroline Williams hit 4-of-7 three-pointers on her way to scoring 14 points, and junior Carla Thomas added 13 points. Navonda Moore led Alabama with 18 points. Junior Cherish Stringfield dished out a game-high seven assists in the game to tie her career best, while Thomas led all players with five steals. The win marks the Commodores’ second road victory and moves their league record to 4-4. Alabama drops to 2-6 in league play. The Commodores travel to Auburn, 72-61 losers at Florida on Thursday, for a march-up on Sunday, Feb. 5. The contests with the Tigers is scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m. CT. |
