1/31/2006 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No. 7 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team will compete against the top sixteen teams in the country this week at the UTSA/ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championship in Madison, Wisconsin. The participants are selected based on final ITA rankings in 2005, and then on region location. This will be Vanderbilt’s tenth year attending the event. “It’s a real honor to be invited and it will be a great experience. It’s really like the NCAA Sweet 16 early in the season,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Geoff Macdonald said. “It’s an incredible weekend of competition. It’s like playing a month’s worth of regular season matches.” The Commodores (3-0) will be facing the Horned Frogs of No. 16 Texas Christian University (1-0) in the first round. The Frogs went 21-5 in 2005 and knocked out No. 7 Clemson during regular season play. This will be TCU’s first tournament appearance. “TCU is up and coming and a very good team,” Macdonald said. “They have recently acquired some of the best players in the country.” Vanderbilt is 17-11 in nine appearances at the tournament and in 2002 the Commodores had their best showing with a second place victory. The Commodores recently defeated No. 35 Michigan in Nashville, 6-1. Amanda Fish and Taka Bertrand led the squad in the first and second singles slot. The Commodores are headed north Tuesday (Jan. 31) to begin play on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Madison. |
