NCC Appreciation Night Saturday 1/30/2006 The National Commodore Club’s (NCC) has planned an “Appreciation Day” Saturday as part of the men’s basketball game with Georgia. This is a time for the NCC to thank its donors and inform others of the importance of the organization, which conducts annual giving campaigns to fund the athletic scholarship program for all varsity sports. Before the game, the NCC will be giving away 3,000 3-point cards in the student and lower end zone sections. Be sure to hold your “3” up after every made VU 3-pointer! At halftime the NCC will salute Gene Southwood and Herb Barrett, both of whom recently endowed men’s basketball scholarships. Southwood was a basketball letterman for the Commodores in the early 1950’s and was on the SEC Tournament Championship team that defeated the University of Kentucky in the 1951 finals. His brother Jerry played for the Commodores from 1965-1967. Gene is a retired Nashville banker and the endowed scholarship will proudly bear the name “Southwood Family” Men’s Basketball Scholarship. Long-time alumus and donor Herb Barrett, (BS, 57) also left a permanent imprint on the athletic program. Herb recognized that an endowed scholarship was a great way to memorialize some family members who were killed in a tragic accident. His scholarship is named the “John, Rick and Wayne Sutton” Men’s Basketball Scholarship in their honor.
