Golden Eagles Crash Land at Currey

1/29/2006

It was a winning Sunday at the Currey Tennis Center, where both the men’s and women’s tennis teams picked up a victory. Following the No. 8 women’s 6-1 win against No. 35 Michigan, the men defeated Tennessee Tech 7-0 for their second sweep of the season.

In doubles action both teams exchanged games in all positions through the third game. Vanderbilt’s No.2 duo was the first to stretch out the lead in the proset and take the victory 8-3 against TTU’s Tiago Gilioli and Juan Gomez, followed by No. 3 pair Nick Cromydas and Nathan Sachs who sealed the doubles
point with an 8-4 win.

On the No. 1 doubles court, TTU led throughout most of the contest. VU’s Ryan Preston and Jordan Magarik tied the proset at 6-6, only to tie again at 7-7 and 8-8. Preston and Magarik defeated Shunsuke Shimizu and Holger Shaefers in the tiebreaker and took the victory 9-8.

In singles play, Preston racked up the first victory for the Commodores, defeating Shimizu 6-1, 6-0. The next wins were earned by No. 5 Cromydas (6-0, 6-3), followed by No. 2 Dufaux (6-2, 6-3).

“I thought it was another workman like performance. I’m very happy with the team’s discipline. Everyone knows what they’ve got to do and they are getting it done,” VU Head Coach Ian Duvenhage said.

The win came down to a tie-breaker in No. 3 singles between Commodore Andy Mack and Golden Eagle Michele Panzeri. Mack started strong, winning the first set against the Panzeri 6-1, but fell in the second set 2-6. Mack revamped and prevailed in the tie-breaker, defeating Panzeri 10-4.

“Andy had a great first set and played an excellent tie-breaker. He lost his concentration in the second set, but he’s played excellent position for two days in a row,” Duvenhage said.

The next contest for the Commodores will be Friday, February 3 in Louisville, Kent.
