Bowlers Go 4-1 in Vegas

LAS VEGAS—Vanderbilt’s bowling team made another strong showing Saturday, winning four of five NCAA matches and finishing in fourth place among 19 total teams at the Brunswick Coca-Cola Invitational.

The Commodores looked sharp in defeating Maryland-Eastern Shore, Minnesota State, Elmhurst and Grambling while losing to Nebraska in the day’s opening contest.  Vanderbilt also polished off a strong Arizona State club team to go 5-2 in the overall tournament that includes many of the nation’s best college club teams.  Vanderbilt is seventh in overall team standings with Fresno State, a powerful club team, leading the event heading into the final day.

“I was impressed with our first five games,” said Coach John Williamson.  “We had a lot of intensity and did what we were capable of doing.  The tournament had a scheduled one hour break and I didn’t think we carried our focus into the later games.  If we had, we would be very close to leading this tournament.  The scores were down across the board today because there was a heavy oil pattern that requires dead-on accuracy.  If the ball is one board left or right you won’t catch a break out  here.”

Tara Kane was the top individual for the Commodores.  The Greenburg, Pa., freshman averaged 205 over six games that included a blistering 253 against Minnesota State for one of the top scores of the day.  However, she had a struggle in the day’s sixth game, turning in a 131.

“I was having some bad bowling luck.” Kane said.  “Bowling is a mental game and I think when my luck went bad I also lost some concentration.  It was disappointing because I felt I let the team down in that game. I came back reasonably well in the seventh  game so it wasn’t that  I  was tired.  Tomorrow we will all come back with a renewed effort.”

Kane enters Sunday’s play in seventh place with a 194.7 average while Peloquin is 18th at 188.2.

Senior Jessica Tower had games of 174-176 coming off the bench, a feat that was not lost on Williamson.

“I was impressed with Jessica’s performance,” he said.  “There are no warm-up lanes in a tournament like this so she came into the lineup cold and performed well.  It is a tribute to her focus and attitude.”

Vanderbilt is now 29-21 for the season.
