Men’s Tennis Opens Season vs. UT-Martin

1/27/2006

The men’s tennis team opens dual match season this weekend when they host UT Martin on Saturday, January 28 and Tennessee Tech Sunday, January 29.

The Commodores competed individually in the SEC Indoors tournament last weekend, where junior Nathan Sachs and sophomore Ryan Preston advanced as far the second round.

This will be the Commodores’ first season with Head Coach Ian Duvenhage at the helm. Duvenhage served as Florida’s head coach for thirteen years, where he became the SEC Coach of the Year three times, prior to coaching on the professional tour for the last three years.

The Commodores will face international competition at the upcoming matches, with UT Martin and Tennessee Tech rosters of predominantly overseas players.

UT Martin’s tennis squad has been a fierce competitor in the Ohio Valley conference for the last few years, thanks to two-time OVC Coach of the Year Dennis Taylor. Taylor’s squad went 4-18 overall in 2005 and 3-3 in the OVC.

The Skyhawks’ lineup has players hailing from Albania, South Africa, England, and two newcomers from Russia.

Tennessee Tech’s lineup is completely international and has players from Italy, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Spain. In 2005 the Golden Eagles were undefeated in the OVC with an 8-0 record and a 14-6 record overall. TTU is lead by interim coach Randy Smith who also serves at TTU’s associate athletic director.
