1/27/2006 Vanderbilt’s bowling team, fresh from a victory over NCAA champion Nebraska, travels to Las Vegas today for its first appearance at the Brunswick Coca-Cola Invitational. The tournament begins Saturday morning and concludes Sunday afternoon at the Gold Coast Bowling Center. “While this is our first trip to this event, I am told be coaches everywhere that this is one of the premier tournaments in the country,” says Vanderbilt Coach John Williamson. “There will be just six college varsity teams participating but it also incorporates strong college club teams and other top amateurs so it will be a very good competitive experience for our young squad.” Last week in the process of finishing third at the Ozark Invitational in Missouri, Vanderbilt set a school record with a 1,092 pin total to top a powerful Nebraska team by 77 pins. That quintet of freshmen Kaitlin Reynolds, Mandy Keily, Tara Kane, Karen Grygiel and Michelle Peloquin will be back in action along with senior JessicaTower. The Commodores emphasized spare pick-ups and concentration during this week’s practice sessions. “Not surprisingly with such a young team, we have been inconsistent so far,” Williamson said, looking at his team’s 25-19 record. “When we have been sharp picking up the spares you would expect to convert, we have put some very good numbers on the board. When we have lost concentration, or played to the level of our competition, we have had disappointing results. When we are focused we are very competitive and that will be our emphasis until we become consistent day in and day out.” |
