No. 22 Women’s Hoops Travel to LSU

1/25/2006

BATON ROUGE, La. — The 22nd-ranked Vanderbilt women’s basketball team travels to face No. 4 LSU on Thursday, Jan. 26, for an 8 p.m. CT tip-off at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The game will be televised regionally by FSN South, with Dave Neal (play-by-play) and Debbie Antonelli (analyst) providing commentary.

The Commodores (13-6, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) have lost two straight, falling at home against then-No. 1 Tennessee before losing on the road at Florida.

Sophomore Liz Sherwood continues to lead the Commodores in scoring (13.7 ppg). Sherwood ranks second in the nation in field goal percentage (.676), just ahead of LSU’s Sylvia Fowles (fourth at .671).

Juniors Caroline Williams and Carla Thomas also are averaging double-digits for the Commodores.

The Lady Tigers (16-1, 5-0 SEC) defeated No. 13 Georgia, 65-64, last weekend. Seimone Augustus, the reigning 2005 National Player of the Year as well as the SEC’s most recent Player of the Week, buried a jumper from the baseline with 14 seconds remaining to lead LSU to victory. Augustus is second in the SEC at 19.9 points per game.

Vanderbilt leads the all-time series, 16-13. The Commodores are 4-7 in Baton Rouge, but have won two of the last three meetings on Lady Tigers’ home court.
