Top Commodore Marks at ETSU

Johnson City, Tenn. — Senior jumper Garnetta Holloway and junior distance runner Amy Huss provided the top Commodore highlights Saturday at the Niswonger Foundation Track and Field Invitational.

Holloway, an All-SEC performer last year, set a personal best while finishing third overall in the long jump. Holloway’s top effort, 18’10.75″, added nearly a foot to her previous best and moves Holloway into third place all-time among Vanderbilt indoor long jumpers.

The team record of 19’8″, established by Ryan Tolbert in 1996, appears within range with the season just getting underway. Huss also continued her solid recent form. Coming off a career performance last week at the Kentucky Invitational, Huss lowered her personal best in the 3,000-meter run by four seconds, finishing third overall in 10:02.88.

With the performance, Huss became the seventh fastest Commodore ever at the distance. Her twin sister, Debbie Huss, finished fifth in the race, running a season-best 10:18.70.

Four other Commodore distance runners — senior Caitlin Shannon, senior Alisa Cotter, freshman Carmen Mims and sophomore Julie Eckerly — earned solid finishes at the meet held on the East Tennessee State campus.

Shannon, Cotter and Mims all ran in the mile, with Shannon finishing third overall with her best time of the campaign, 5:08.26.  Cotter and Mims finished fourth and sixth with efforts of 5:10.76 and 5:15.65, respectively.  Eckerly earned fifth in the 5,000 meters, running 18:38.72.

The Commodores’ distance medley foursome of freshman Brittany Alberto, sophomore Lauren Fortson, senior Latisha Bryant and freshman Sarah Scott also finished fourth, running 12:52.36.
