NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt Commodores defeated Montana State 7-0 in both teams’ first match of the spring season.

The Commodores went uncontested in the doubles round winning the point 3-0. No. 3 doubles team freshmen Liberty Sveke and Courtney Ulery were the first to defeat the Bobcats, flying through the proset 8-0.

“They played really well,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Geoff Macdonald said. “They were in control the whole time. They’re a potential team for the season.”

No. 2 double duo freshman Maggie Yahner and sophomore Amanda Taylor were next to finish in what started as a close set with the Bobcats trailing by only a point (3,2). But Yahner and Taylor held the Bobcat duo to two and took the victory in set 8-2. Junior Amanda Fish and sophomore Taka Bertrand finished out the doubles round with an 8-0 win.

Sophomore Caroline Ferrell took the No. 6 singles slot to replace Taka Bertrand who sat out to heal a minor injury. Fish played No. 1 with a 1-2 victory over Bobcat opponent sophomore Nuria Lozano. Fish gave fans a scare when she fell on the court, but the injury will not keep her off the court tomorrow, according to Macdonald.

Sophomore Amanda Taylor jumped from playing the Nos. 4 and 5 courts in 2005 to the No. 2 slot against Montana State. Taylor took the set 5-2 from Bobcat sophomore Nicole Luetolf.

Freshman Yahner made her Vanderbilt singles debut playing the No. 3 slot with a 0-2 victory, while No. 4 Ulery went 1-1, No. 5 Sveke went 1-0, and No. 6 Ferrell went 0-1.

“I thought it was a great first day,” Macdonald said. “Montana State really had great spirit and play NCAA level tennis that is worthy of a ranking.”

The next match for the Commodores will be Saturday, January 14 in the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center when they will host Michigan State at 11 a.m.
