Women’s Hoops Open SEC Play at Arkansas Sunday 1/8/2006
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The No. 19 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team opens the Southeastern Conference portion of the 2005-06 season on Sunday, Jan. 8, for a 2 p.m. CT tip against Arkansas at Bud Walton Arena. The Commodores (11-3, 0-0) are the only team in the SEC that is yet to play a league game. Last week, Vanderbilt defeated Western Kentucky, 72-57, behind a career-high 28 points from sophomore center Liz Sherwood. Tuesday’s game also marked the return of junior forward Carla Thomas, who has missed a pair of contests after suffering a concussion in mid-December. Thomas, a preseason all-conference pick by writers and coaches, posted her first double-double of the season against the Lady Toppers with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Razorbacks (9-5, 1-0) enter Sunday’s contest on the heels of a 66-45 win over conference-rival Missisippi State. Senior forward Kristin Moore scored a game-high 15 points to lead Arkansas to the rout. Vanderbilt has won the last five meetings between the two schools, daying back to the 2001-02 season. The Commodores bounced Arkansas from the SEC Tournament a season ago. |
