No. 20 Commodores Fall to Arkansas in SEC Opener 1/8/2006
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The No. 19 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team opened Southeastern Conference play with a heartbreaking overtime loss Sunday at the hands of Arkansas, 52-51, at Bud Walton Arena. The Commodores led by three after junior guard Dee Davis hit the first of two free throws with only four seconds remaining in regulation. After a miss on the second charity toss, Arkansas’ Brittney Vaughn dribbled past half-court and threw up a 40-foot shot that somehow found its way into the basket to force overtime. Vanderbilt again took three-point lead late in the overtime period, as freshman guard Holly Rogers hit one-of-two free throws. With 16 seconds remaining in overtime, UA’s Rochelle Vaughn — the older sister of Brittney — hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 51-51. The Commodores had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds, but a missed jump shot led to a loose ball foul on the Commodores, putting Arkansas’ Leslie Howard on the line with only two seconds remaining. Howard made the first of two free throws to seal the upset win for the Lady ‘Backs. Davis led all scorers with 15 points while also dishing out eight assists. Howard led the Lady ‘Backs with 13 points on 3-of-7 shooting from behind the arc. Junior forward Carla Thomas posted her second straight double-double, posting 11 points and 14 rebounds. Thomas stands one point away from being the 26th Commodore to reach 1,000-point plateau. The Commodores play host to their SEC home opener on Thursday, Jan. 12, as Mississippi State visits Memorial Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. CT tip off.
