Post Game Quotes

Vanderbilt Head Coach Kevin Stallings

Opening Statement:

“We certainly congratulate Cincinnati they outplayed us in really just about every phase. We just didn’t have the kind of day we need to have to beat a team like that. They got control early on we make some ridiculously bad turnovers. Then we were on our heels the rest of the game. To win a game like this you have to be in a position to dictate and we didn’t. We were dictated. We’re disappointed but we’ll try to figure out how to fight back.”

On Cincinnati’s run coming out of the half:

“It was frustrating because of why we couldn’t make a run. We had bad turnovers and undisciplined play, and that’s my fault. We didn’t play with the kind of strength and discipline to win this game. We had some guys give us great efforts. JT’s really battling a sore foot. He doesn’t have any lift. I thought he gave us a great effort under his limitations. We had too many of our important parts not responding to win the game like that.”

On Cincinnati’s run coming out of the half:

“I told the team that the game could be won or lost in the first five minutes of the second half. When you give up 49, it’s hard. We’ve worked all week defensively and worked hard on getting back to fundamentals. It’s hard to defend when they got 26 points off turnovers. You can’t defend when your defense doesn’t have a chance to get set. We’ll have to go back to work on that.”

On bench depth:

“Our bench was shorter today because we had some starters that were no-shows. We had guys that we count on and it felt like they were on the outside of the game watching in. We had some guys come off the bench and play well. Demarre played a decent game. You don’t have a long bench when your starters don’t show up.”

On responding from the loss:

“I think that it needs to send a message to our guys that you can’t use finals as an excuse, you can’t use aches and pains as an excuse. There can’t be any excuses when the referee throws the ball up in the air. It’s about coming and bringing the best you have. We didn’t bring our best today and they did. They deserved to win. The right team won the game today. We just have to figure out how to get better and we will.”
