Derrick Byars Named SEC Player of the Week

Vanderbilt guard/forward Derrick Byars has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week the league announced Monday. FONT>

Byars led Vanderbilt with 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the Commodores 76-75 home win over Oregon on Nov. 30. The junior transfer from the University of Virginia also dished out a team-high seven assists without a turnover and grabbed five rebounds.  The Memphis native helped the Commodores rally from an 11-point second half deficit, scoring 13 of his 20 points in the second stanza. Byars ranks second on the team in scoring averaging 11.2 points to go along with 3.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds through five games. His 3.8 assists per game currently rank eighth in the league. SPAN>

Byars is the first Commodore to receive the league’s weekly honor since current senior guard Mario Moore earned the accolade on Jan. 10, 2005.  It marks the 21^st time a Vanderbilt player has won the award since its inception prior to the start of the 1985 season. SPAN>
