Men’s Hoops Start Season Against Jacksonville State

11/18/2005

Vanderbilt battles Jacksonville State in the 2005-06 season opener for both teams, Friday, Nov. 18, at Memorial Gymnasium. Game time is set for 7 p.m. The game is the first of three contests in the next five days for the Commodores with Furman visiting on Sunday and UNC-Greensboro coming to Nashville on Tuesday.

The Commodores are coming off an 87-70 exhibition victory over Northern State on Nov. 5 that saw five players reach double figures. Sophomore swingman Shan Foster led Vanderbilt with 17 points, hitting 6-of-11 from the field, including five 3-pointers.

Vanderbilt will put its 24-game non-conference win streak on the line against the Gamecocks Friday. The contest is the first meeting in series history with the Ohio Valley Conference member. The Commodores are 87-31 all-time in season openers.

Senior forward Julian Terrell is scheduled to make his return to the court after sitting out the Northern State exhibition game due to a right foot injury. Terrell was Vanderbilt’s leading rebounder a year ago with 5.1 per game.

Sophomore guard Alex Gordon will start in place of senior Mario Moore who is sitting out the second game of his three-game suspension for violating team rules. Gordon played in every game last season averaging 6.0 points and 1.2 assists.

The new edition Commodores are the most athletic group of players collected during head coach Kevin Stallings’ seven-year stay at Vanderbilt. The Commodores were picked to finish third in the SEC Eastern Division at SEC media days in October. Foster has received First Team All-SEC honors from the league’s coaches while Moore has earned Second Team accolades from both the league’s coaches and media.
