TEMPE, Ariz. — The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team will open the 2005-06 season in the WBCA/BTI Classic on Friday, Nov. 11, against host Arizona State at the Wells Fargo Arena. The game tips at 9:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live by Fox Sports Net.

The national broadcast has been picked up by Fox Sports South and will be available in the Middle Tennessee market.

Friday night’s contest features a pair of preseason top-20 teams who reached the Sweet 16 a year ago. The Commodores finished the 2004-05 season with a record of 24-8, giving Head Coach Melanie Balcomb her third 20-plus-win season in as many years with the program.

Vanderbilt saw its first exhibition action of the year last Saturday, defeating Anderson College, 92-68, at Memorial Gymnasium. Junior Caroline Williams led the Dores with 28 points, while freshman Christina Wirth added 20 points. Wirth, who grew up in neighboring Mesa, Ariz., should see her first regular-season collegiate action just a few miles away from home.

The Commodores will play again on Saturday, Nov. 12, facing either Missouri or Clemson in the second round of the WBCA/BTI Classic. Saturday’s games will be played at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. CT.

Vanderbilt fans can hear both of the Commodores’ games live on WNSR 560-AM as Charlie Mattos returns to call the action for his 11th season.
