Vanderbilt Advances to Missouri Valley Semifinals

11/10/2005

Peoria, Ill. — Vanderbilt and Eastern Illinois battled to a scoreless tie after two overtimes, before the Commodores won a penalty kick shootout, 4-3, to advance to the Missouri Valley Conference tournament semifinals.

The third-seeded Commodores (9-6-2) will take on the No. 2 seed Creighton Friday at 5 p.m. for the right to play in the finals.

The match was a back and forth affair, with the outcome not determined until the final penalty kick. The shootout had to go to a sixth penalty shot because the contest was tied at 3-3 after the standard five attempts. Vanderbilt’s first two shots in the shootout were saved by EIU goalkeeper Mark Hansen, while the Panthers Jimmy Klatter scored on the team’s first attempt to give them a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Brian Mascarenhas scored on VU’s third shot to tie it at 1-1, but Brad Earl scored on Eastern’s third attempt to make it 2-1. Both teams scored on their fourth shot, before Vandy’s Josh Fallin scored on the fifth shot to tie it at 3-3. VU goalkeeper Kenny Schoeni then saved EIU’s winning attempt to go to an extra shot. Jason Le connected on his PK for the Commodores, while the Panthers final shot sailed high to seal the win.

“I don’t think we played up to our usual standards and I think Eastern played well,” said head coach Tim McClements. “For some reason we were not as sharp during regulation, but I thought we played well in overtime. It is anybody’s game when you go to penalty kicks and it looked like it could be over after we went down 2-0. But the guys battled back and came up big when they needed to.”

Schoeni recorded five saves in the contest, while EIU’s Hansen recorded six.

The Panthers held a 14-11 shot advantage, while the Commodores had a 9-5 corner kick edge.

Eastern Illinois’ season ended at 5-9-3.

“We will need to take the day off tomorrow and then get ready for Creighton,” said McClements. “We played well against them last Saturday and are excited to match up with them again.”
