No. 5 Bulldogs Beat Commodores 34-17 10/15/2005 NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The fifth-ranked undefeated Georgia Bulldogs rained on Vanderbilt’s homecoming party tonight, beating the Commodores 34-17 before a season-high crowd of 38,822. Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler completed 15-of-28 pass attempts for 160 yards and one touchdown. But a persistent Bulldog defense limited the senior’s overall effectiveness, sacking him four times and intercepting him once. After the Bulldogs took a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter, Commodore tailback Cassen Jackson-Garrison bullied his way through the Georgia defensive line on a four-yard off-tackle touchdown run. The story of the night, however, was Bulldog quarterback D.J. Shockley, who completed 15 of 30 pass attempts, threw three touchdown passes and amassed 293 yards in the air. Cutler connected with Marlon White midway through the third quarter on a 14-yard pass into the end zone, bringing the Dores within 10 points (24-14). But the last Black-and-Gold score of the night would come from Bryant Hahnfeldt, who kicked a 45-yard field goal in the third quarter. Hahnfeldt also had a punt blocked in the third quarter. Commodore wide receiver George Smith made his first catch since returning to action following a gunshot wound sustained earlier in the season. Consistent with his stellar play throughout the season, senior linebacker Moses Osemwegie turned in another outstanding performance, tying a career-high with 13 tackles (two for a loss), while also contributing an interception and a sack. Senior cornerback Andrew Pace had nine tackles and sophomore linebacker Jonathan Goff also recorded a sack. The Commodores (4-3, 2-2) travel to South Carolina next week to face the Gamecocks (3-3, 1-3). Kickoff time is set for 3:30 p.m. ET. |
