Dennis, Griffin Win SEC Weekly Honors 10/3/2005 Nashville — Sophomore forward Sarah Dennis (Germantown, Tenn.) and junior goalkeeper Tyler Griffin (Charlotte, N.C.) helped the No. 19 Commodores (11-1, 4-0 SEC) to two 1-0 victories in Southeastern Conference road games at Auburn and Alabama this weekend. On Monday they each helped themselves to SEC Player of the Week honors. It marks the first time since the league began doling out multiple player of the week awards that two recipients have been on the same team during the same week. Dennis earned the SEC Offensive Player of the Week title scoring both Commodore goals on the weekend, to give her five on the season. She is currently tied for the lead on the team, and she is leading the team with three game-winning goals on the year. Griffin was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week after earning her seventh and eighth shutouts of the season. She now has 11 career shutouts, tied for second all time in VU history. She also recorded her 106th career save, moving her into sixth place on the Vanderbilt list. She is two behind Stacee Sproul for fifth. The student-athletes are the fourth and fifth Commodores named SEC Players of the Week this year. Junior defenders Monica Buff (Lilburn, Ga.) and Kim Perkins (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) each earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week awards while junior forward Lea Lafield (Dallas, Texas) was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week two weeks ago. The individual recognition comes in the midst of the best start in Vanderbilt history. The 11-1 mark is the best record through 12 games ever by a Commodore team. The 11 wins and four conference wins already is the most since 2000. The team will have a chance to even the win totals from that season (12-9, 5-4 SEC) on Friday when the team plays at South Carolina (5-6, 1-3 SEC) in Columbia, S.C. at 6 p.m. |
