Dores Drop the Spiders, 37-13 9/24/2005
NASHVILLE — The red hot Vanderbilt Commodore football team continued its undefeated streak tonight, beating the Richmond Spiders 37-13. The Dores are atop the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference with a perfect record of 4-0 (2-0 in league play). Senior quarterback Jay Cutler broke two records tonight before a season-high crowd of 38,446 in the team’s strongest start in nearly 50 years. The senior quarterback’s 277 total-yard performance carried his career total to 7,956, placing him in lone ownership of the school record. His five-yard pass to Erik Davis in the second quarter also moved him to first in career touchdown passes (42). Two of Cutler’s teammates crossed the century mark tonight: Cassen Jackson-Garrison ran for a career-high 119 yards and his second career touchdown, and Earl Bennett caught 11 passes for 124 yards. Jeff Jennings, who entered the game with an SEC-leading five rushing touchdowns, ran for one and caught another to take his season total to seven. Senior wide receiver Eric Davis caught seven passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. Freshman wide receiver George Smith also caught his first touchdown pass tonight. Kicker Bryant Hahnfeldt kicked a 43-yard field goal. For the second time this season, backup quarterback Chris Nickson took over for Cutler with 7:31 left in the fourth quarter. The redshirt-freshman from Brundidge, Ala., showed good mobility, rushing for 39 yards and completing one of two pass attempts for 13 yards. Vanderbilt was an impressive 10-for-14 on third-down conversions tonight. Senior linebacker Moses Osemwegie led the Commodore defense with five solo tackles (six total), followed by junior safety Ben Koger, who had four total tackles and two assists. Linebackers Marcus Buggs, a sophomore, and Kevin Joyce, a junior, each had a total of five tackles. The Dores face mid-state rival MTSU at Vanderbilt Stadium next Saturday at 6 p.m. CT.
