Lafield Named to National Team; VU Ranking Jumps

9/20/2005 Nashville — Vanderbilt junior forward Lea Lafield (Dallas, Texas) may need to get another shelf in her dorm room. Lafield, who was named the Southeastern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week Monday, was honored by Top Drawer Soccer by being included on the National Team of the Week.

Lafield, who is the second Commodore to earn the Top Drawer distinction this season, scored the game- winning goal and had an assist in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over previously undefeated Samford. Commodore junior goalkeeper Tyler Griffin, (Charlotte, N.C.) was included on the team a week ago after she posted five straight shutouts en route to setting the school record for consecutive scoreless minutes at 515.

The team itself is receiving more attention as well. The Commodores (7-1-0) moved up four spots in Soccer Buzz Magazine’s rankings to No. 20, it’s highest ranking since 1999. The team also moved up to No. 2 in the Central Region, also the highest since 1999. This is the third-straight week the Commodores have been ranked in this poll.

Other polls have been slower to take note of Vanderbilt’s early success. In the Soccer Times poll, Vanderbilt, which has won seven-straight, allowing only one goal during that span, received six votes this week.
