Osemwegie Honored as SEC Defensive Player of the Week 9/19/2005 Nashville — The Vanderbilt football team is off to a 3-0 start thanks in part to timely big plays made by its defense. One Commodore has a knack for making those plays in clutch situations. Senior linebacker Moses Osemwegie (Nashville, Tenn.) was named the Southeastern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week after making his second-straight game-ending big play. After intercepting a pass to end the Arkansas’ rally last week and secure a 28-24 victory, Osemwegie again caused a turnover to dash Mississippi’s hopes of a comeback in a 31-23 VU win. With Ole miss driving for a potential tying touchdown in the waning seconds, Osemwegie took matters in his own hands, sacking Ole Miss QB Robert Lane for a 15-yard loss. Osemwegie also forced and recovered a fumble on the game-deciding play, which happened to be his 300th career tackle. The effort was part of an excellent game by the Commodores defensive captain. Osemwegie finished the game with 11 total tackles (a season high), to go with a sack, forced fumble, fumble recovery and quarterback hurry. Osemwegie, who was named by the coaches and AP First Team All-SEC in the preseason, is also the conference’s lesading, active career tackler. He has receive All-American recognition in several publications and has been named to watchlists for the Butkus, Lombardi and Lott awards. The Commodores (3-0, 2-0 SEC) continue their five-game home stand Saturday when they host Richmond at Dudley Field. Kickoff is at 6 pm. |
