Vanderbilt Announces 2005-06 Women’s Basketball Schedule 9/12/2005 NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 2005-06 Vanderbilt women’s basketball schedule includes nine games against teams that advanced to last year’s NCAA Tournament, three match-ups against 2005 NCAA Final Four participants and 14 home dates, Vanderbilt head coach Melanie Balcomb announced Monday. The schedule once again includes a treat for Commodore basketball fans as both VU’s men’s and women’s teams will participate in doubleheaders slated for Nov. 22 (Alabama A&M) and Dec. 10 (Miami [Ohio]). Game times and the men’s opponents are still to be announced. The Commodores will open the 2005-06 regular season on the road at the WBCA/BTI Classic hosted by Arizona in Tempe, Ariz., Nov. 11-12. VU will face the Sun Devils, a 2005 NCAA Sweet 16 participant in the first game of the tournament. The meeting will be the second ever between the two teams. Either Missouri or Clemson will be the team’s opponent in the second game of the tournament. Alabama A&M makes its first trip to Memorial Gym on Nov. 22 for VU’s regular season home opener. Vanderbilt then hosts its annual Vanderbilt Tournament. VU battles Charleston Southern on Nov. 25, then faces either McNeese St. or Colgate on Nov. 26. A trip to Raleigh, N.C. to face NC State caps off the month of November. The Wolfpack, who advanced to the 2005 NCAA Tournament, snapped the Commodores 49 game home-winning streak last season. The Commodores have three home games and three road games in December. VU heads to Old Dominion on Dec. 4 for the first meeting since the 1996-97 season between the two teams. A return trip home has Northern Arizona (Dec. 8) and Miami (Ohio) (Dec. 10) waiting for the Commodores. The Black and Gold will travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Dec. 20, to face North Carolina, which advanced to the NCAA Elite 8 last season and to Philadelphia, Pa., to take on LaSalle (Dec. 22). The Commodores close out the 2005 calendar year at home against William & Mary (Dec. 30) before ringing in the New Year with a home game against Western Kentucky (Jan. 3). The rugged 14-game Southeastern Conference campaign opens on Jan. 8 in Fayetteville, Ark. as VU faces the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks. Fans will get a sneak preview of the team on Oct. 23 when VU holds its Black & Gold Scrimmage. Two other exhibition games are scheduled against Anderson College on Nov. 5 and against EA Sports on Nov. 16. Other highlights to Vanderbilt’s 2005-06 schedule include: Vanderbilt’s first SEC home game of the season has the Lady Bulldogs of Mississippi State traveling to Memorial Gym Jan. 12. The Commodores bested Miss. State last February in a double-overtime thriller which saw Vanderbilt rally late twice to win 106-98 in Starkville, Miss. Home match-ups include contests against three of last year’s NCAA Tournament squads: Tennessee (Jan. 19), Ole Miss (Jan. 29) and Georgia (Feb. 19). Arkansas (Feb. 9), Kentucky (Feb. 23) and South Carolina (Feb. 26) round out the Memorial Gym conference slate.
