Griffin Named to National Team of the Week

9/12/2005 Junior goalkeeper Tyler Griffin (Charlotte, N.C.) was named to Top Drawer Soccer’s National Team of the Week Monday after recording her fifth-straight shut out.

Griffin recorded five saves over the weekend during a 2-0 victory at MTSU and a 1-0 nail-biter at UAB. In the latter game she had to make an incredible save in the final minutes to preserve the 1-goal lead.

Griffin is also closing in on the Vanderbilt record of consecutive scoreless minutes played, which currently stands at 450, held by Christy Baringer (9/20/94-10/8/94). Griffin is already at 406 minutes and needs only to hold Morehead State scoreless during the first half of Thursday night’s game to tie and break the record.

This is not the first time she ahs been recognized for her superior talents. Griffin was named to the First Team All-SEC last season after posting a 1.04 Goals Against Average — the fourth best season performance by a VU goalkeeper. This year, Griffin is at an unreal 0.36 GAA. Through six games (495 minutes) she has recorded five saves and a stellar 0.882 save percentage.

Griffin is joined at the goalkeeper position by Marquette’s Laura Boyer and Utah’s Ashley Mason. Also on the squad is another Southeastern Conference student-athlete, Georgia defender Kristin Garman.

While Griffin’s performance has been outstanding to date, she has also been aided by a top-notch defensive unit that includes senior Ashley Duffy, and juniors Monica Buff, Kari Boersma and Kim Perkins. Buff was selected as SEC Defensive Player of the Week a week ago, as well as being included on the SEC All-Tournament team last year.

Griffin will get the chance to break the record Thursday against Morehead State at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex at 7 pm. The No. 25 Commodores (5-1-0) will then host Samford on Sunday at 6 pm.
