Cutler Named SEC Player of the Week 9/12/2005 Vanderbilt senior quarterback Jay Cutler (Santa Clause, Ind.) was named the Southeastern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week after engineering his second straight fourth-quarter comeback to defeat Arkansas 28-24, Saturday night in Fayetteville, Ark. The victory gave the Commodores their first 2-0 start since 1998. The recognition marks the second time in Cutler’s career that he has earned the distinction, the first coming after Vanderbilt defeated Kentucky 28-17 in November 2003. Cutler completed 23-of-45 passes for 278 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion — most of those numbers coming in the fourth quarter. In the final period, which began with a Razorback advantage of 24-13, Cutler connected on 14 of 21 passes for 178 yards and both scores. The signal caller also moved up in the Vanderbilt record books. He tied former quarterbacks Greg Zolman and Whit Taylor for first place in touchdown passes with his 40th and 41st coming against the Razorbacks. He is also now exactly 300 yards shy of the total offense record held by Zolman, who earned 7,607 in his career. Cutler also holds the VU record for combined touchdowns (58), and could challenge nearly every Commodore passing and total offense mark. Heading into this weekend’s home opener against Ole Miss, he ranks fourth in passing yards (6,178), completions (485) and attempts (861). The game, played at Vanderbilt’s Dudley Field, will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. CT and will be televised on Jefferson-Pilot. |
