Women’s Golf Team Opens Season 9/10/2005 Vanderbilt’s women’s golf team opens its fall schedule Sunday at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic. The Commodore lineup has a distinctly new look with a pair of highly recruited freshmen making an early impact. “When I look at our team this fall as compared to last year,” says Coach Martha Richards Freitag, “the first thing that strikes me is that we are more mature — even though we still don’t have a senior on the roster! Chris Brady and Kristen Svicarovich are now juniors and Liebelei Lawrence has a year of college under her belt.” Freitag is quick to point out that freshman Jacqui Concolino and Amber Lundskog should make significant contributions. Concolino, who came to Vanderbilt from Orlando, Fla., led the squad in qualifying for the Cougar Classic and is expected to play in the No. 1 slot when the tournament begins Monday. The 2005 Florida prep runner-up toured the Golf Club of Tennessee in three-under 68 during qualifying, the first time she had played the beautiful course. Lundskog, a high school All-American from San Diego, has also gotten off to a good start and is likely to be playing No. 3 in this event. Brady, the all-SEC performer and medalist at four events already, will probably open at No. 2 with Svicarovich, 16th at the NCAA Championships last spring, at No. 4 and Lawrence will be in the five slot. The 19-team tournament will be played over two days. Due to the threat of inclement weather in the area, play has been moved up one day. Thirty-six holes are scheduled for Sunday, with the final 18 to be played on Monday. Other than the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in the spring, it will be the only time all season Vanderbilt will play two tournament rounds in a day. “This is a wonderful tournament,” Freitag say. “The field is a very good one with six other SEC teams along with quality ACC programs and other southeastern power teams. Our goal, of course, is to win the event but the field is strong enough that we could play well and not make the top six.” One of the boosters of this event is John Rivers, brother of Vanderbilt’s Board of Trust chairman Martha Ingram. Mrs. Ingram will attend the tournament and last year even served as its honorary starter. Live scoring will be found on golfstat.com. |
