Vanderbilt Men’s Soccer Wins Season Opener In Overtime Over Georgia State, 4-3 9/2/2005 Charleston, S.C. — Senior forward John Krause scored three goals, including the game winner at the 95:44 mark in overtime, to lead Vanderbilt to a 4-3 win over Georgia State in its season opener in the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Soccer Classic Friday night at Patriot Points Field. Vanderbilt (1-0) led 3-0 at halftime and used several reserves in the second half before Georgia State (0-1) rallied to tie the game with three minutes left in regulation. Krause, who led the Commodores with 12 goals scored last year, got off to a quick start by scoring the team’s first goal of the season at the 2:20 mark off of a corner kick by senior Patrick Ryan. He then tallied his second score at the 31-minute mark off of an assist by Austin Woolard. Senior defender Ryan Paugh used an assist by freshman Conor Neusel to score VU’s third goal of the half at the 35:45 mark. Georgia State rallied to tie the game with three goals in the final 30 minutes of regulation. Alberto Villareal (62:20) scored the first goal, while Dathan Knott scored the last two (78:53, 86:56) for the Panthers. Krause then completed the hat trick with an unassisted goal in overtime to give the Commodores the win. “John Krause had an outstanding game and led us to the win tonight,” VU Head Coach Tim McClements said. “We did some really good things in the first half and Georgia State made a nice rally in the second half to send the game into overtime.” Vanderbilt will play host College of Charleston tomorrow night at 8 p.m. in the tournament finale.
