Women’s Soccer Falls On Last-Minute Goal 8/26/2005 BOULDER — The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team lost a heartbreaker 2-1 to the University of Colorado on Friday afternoon in front of 1,166 fans at Prentup Field in Boulder, Colo. With only 1:32 left to play in the second half CU freshman Megan Manthey scored on a one-timer to give the Buffs a 2-1 lead. “Tyler Griffin played very well for us in goal tonight,” said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill. “She gave up two goals, but they were very good goals. Both were world-class finishes that she can not be faulted for. She played a fantastic game and had some really key saves that kept us in the game.” Griffin earlier stymied a chance in the 70th minute when she wrapped up the ball in one-on-one attempt by CU’s Nikki Keller. Keller had another chance eight minutes later but Griffin shut her down once again. “Colorado is a very, very talented team,” Hill said. “They is no doubt they are an NCAA Tournament-caliber team. I’m very encouraged by what I saw tonight. I think it’s a great beginning of the season. Of course we would’ve liked to get the win but I was pleased with the effort from the girls.” The Commodores took a lead into halftime thanks to the efforts of a pair of talented freshmen. In the 35th minute junior Lea Lafield crossed a ball to newcomer Amy Wilcox who chipped it towards freshman forward Jessica Lenze, who cleaned it up for the first goal of her career. “It’s certainly exciting to think about the future of our program to see two freshmen get involved on a play like that,” Hill said. “You have to be excited when you see them perform that way right out of the gate.” Colorado’s Fran Munnelly, an AP Second Team All-American in 2004, evened the score when she fired in to the left upper-V in the 53rd minute. Colorado edged the Commodores in shots 11-9. “ We definitely need to improve our play inside of 18-yards,” Hill said. “That is where the game was won. We looked very good out there at times and were able to control the ball but we need to improve our efforts close to the goal.” Hill also cited the strong play of junior defender Monica Buff as well as the versatility of freshman Katie Schulz. “I was very encouraged by the play of Monica Buff in the midfield,” Hill said. “She really stepped up and was a leader out there for us. She made some great passes and helped us set up what we wanted to do. “I was also very impressed by Katie Schulz in our back four. She has made some great strides and I think she will be a tremendous asset to our program this season and in years to come.” The team will have its work cut out for it come Sunday when it heads to Denver to face the University of Denver. The players from DU were in attendance to scout Vanderbilt in preparation for its season opener at 1 pm central time on Sunday. “We have a really quick turnaround,” Hill said. “They’ll have fresh legs and they’re also used to the altitude. We’re going to have to dig a little bit deeper. It’s very important that we split this weekend. We need to let go of the loss and refocus so that we can do everything that it takes to get a win on Sunday.” Colorado vs. Vanderbilt Scoring Summary 1.
