Women’s Soccer Begins 2005 Season Tonight

8/26/2005 The 2005-2006 Vanderbilt Athletics season gets started today when the Women’s Soccer team begins its season on the road at Colorado at 5 pm central.

Last weekend the Commodores got their first taste of game-action when they defeated Birmingham Southern 3-0 in a scrimmage match. Head coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill said she was pleased by the team’s effort and with the way the players adopted a new, aggressive style of play that was implemented in the spring and during preseason practices.

The Commodores will have their work cut out for them however.

The Buffaloes return 10 starters from a team that went 15-6-2 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship Tournament last season. The Buffs return seniors Fran Munnelly, Ashlie Mihalcin and Jessica Keller. Munnelly, a midfielder, earned First- Team All-Big 12 honors and was named to the NSCAA All-American Third-Team after pouring in nine goals and five assists for 23 points.

Her sister, junior defender Laura Munelly was also a First-Team All-Big 12 selection. Mihalcin set a school record with 10 goals in 2004 and matched Fran Munnelly with 23 points. Keller set a CU record with 12 shutouts last season and posted a 0.77 Goals Against Average.

After Friday’s game the team will head to Denver where it will face the University of Denver Sunday, Aug. 28 at 1 pm central.
