Women’s Soccer Blanks BSC in Scrimmage 8/20/2005 Head Coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill learned something about the 2005 version of her team when they scrimmaged with Birmingham Southern Saturday night in Huntsville, Ala. The Commodores won the contest 3-0. “It was a great opportunity to get to play against another opponent,” Coveleskie Hill said. “I was really happy with our athleticism and the production of goals. I was also very excited with the new style of play and what we’ve done during the preseason.” One of the things the team worked on the during the spring and this preseason has been implementing a new up-tempo, aggressive style of play to try and score more goals. Senior Kelci Hegg had no trouble switching back to her natural position as a forward as she got things rolling for the Commodores with the first goal of the night and junior Lea Lafield was back in form as she picked up the assist. Last season Lafield led the Southeastern Conference with assists during conference play. Freshman forward Jessica Lenze made a quick impact when she found junior Monica Buff who nailed a header into the back of the net to take a 2-0 advantage. Lafield struck again when sophomore midfielder Amy Baumann found her for the third and final goal of the night. The offense wasn’t the only star of the night. The Commodores defense held off the BSC threat and junior goalkeeper Tyler Griffin, the reigning All-SEC first-teamer, didn’t allow a goal. Last season the team posted three shutouts. Coveleskie Hill said she was pleased with the team’s overall effort and excited to see some of the different combinations of players she will be able to use during the season. “We’re definitely deeper than we have been in years past,” Coveleskie Hill said. “We have a lot of competitive players with a tremendous level of depth. We had some good games from all of the girls today. Our decision is very difficult to figure out who’s going to be in our starting 11. We may have many different starting line-ups depending on what type of look we’re going for.” The team will be back in Nashville to begin classes this week, but heads to Colorado this weekend where it will play against the University of Colorado on Aug. 26 and the University of Denver on Aug. 28. The home-opener against Francis Marion will take place Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 pm. |
