Former Commodore Matt Freije Signing Autographs Friday at Tennessee State Fairgrounds

In an effort to help raise money for the American Cancer Society, former Vanderbilt basketball player Matt Freije will be signing autographs Friday, June 24, at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds.

Freije will be available to sign autographs from Noon to 5 p.m. at the “Counting for a Cure” American Cancer Society booth.  People stopping by the table are also eligible for prize drawings for Vanderbilt basketball tickets, Tennessee Titans tickets and weekend travel getaways.

The event was conceived by Freije’s former Commodore teammate Martin Schnedlitz who is currently attending classes at Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management.  As a part of the Accelerator program, a summer business institute, Schnedlitz and his teammates decided to hold a fundraiser for the society and hopes to raise nearly $3,000 on Friday.

Schnedlitz and his team are competing against eight other Accelerator groups at the fairgrounds as part of their final project.

“Rather than selling a product or a service as a trial run for one afternoon, we thought it would be interesting to use this opportunity to do something different,” Schnedlitz said. “We want to raise as much money as possible within a five-hour time frame, then donate it all to the American Cancer Society.”

Schnedlitz and Freije were senior teammates on the 2003-04 Vanderbilt team that went 23-10 overall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinals. Vanderbilt’s all-time leading scorer with 1,891 points, Freije was a four-time All-Southeastern Conference performer who was drafted in the second round by the NBA’s Miami Heat. He later played briefly during the 2004-05 NBA season with the New Orleans Hornets.

“It’s an opportunity to promote a great organization and help a friend at the same time,” Freije said. “I look forward to seeing some Commodore fans there.”
