Audra Falk Earns All-American Status

5/24/2005

Moves on to face SEC rival Kalsarieva in Sweet Sixteen.

Vanderbilt senior Audra Falk dropped TCU’s Helena Besovic, 6-4, 6-3 on Tuesday morning to advance to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Individual Championships and notch All-American honors for the second consecutive year.

“With the win, I feel like I can just let loose and rip away,” said Falk. “Everything from this point on is just icing on the cake for me.”

In early action, No. 40 Besovic stole the first three games of the match, but No. 17 Falk countered with a pair of breaks to even the showdown at 3-3.

The two held serve to knot the match once again at 4-4, but Falk broke Besovic to take a 5-4 lead and held to claim the first frame, 6-4.

Besovic and Falk traded games early in the second set until VU’s senior broke her TCU opponent to take a 3-2 lead. Falk never looked back, taking the second set and the match, 6-4, 6-3.

The win pits the Cincinnati, Ohio product against Kentucky’s top player, the fourth seed, Aibika Kalsarieva.

The two faced each other earlier in the SEC slate on April 16 in Lexington. Kalsarieva knocked off Falk in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Vanderbilt went on to take the match, 4-3.

“I feel good about the match with (Kalsarieva),” said Falk. “All the pressure is on her. We know how to play each other, and I think whoever comes out with a better day is going to take the match.”

With the win, Falk improves her 2005 singles record to 20-8. She has now eclipsed the 20-win plateau in each of her four years at Vanderbilt.
