VU Women Impress at NCAA Individual Tourney 5/23/2005 Falk Moves on to the Second Round VU senior Audra Falk notched her First Round matchup against Stanford’s Lejla Hodzic on Monday in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Falk took a commanding, 4-0 lead in the first stanza and cruised to a 6-1 first frame. In the second, Hodzic battled back to take a 4-1 advantage, but VU’s senior refused to be denied, rallying to take the next five games and earn her spot in the Second Round, 6-1, 6-4. Falk was a semifinalist in last year’s tournament. The Cincinnati, Ohio product will face TCU’s 40th ranked Helena Besovic in the Round of 32 on Tuesday. One court over, VU sophomore sensation Amanda Fish battled Georgia Tech ace, No. 12 Kristi Miller, but fell 6-3, 6-2. Fish finishes the 2005 campaign with an astounding 42-11 record. The ITA’s “Player to Watch” dropped nine ranked opponents while playing all but one match at the No. 2 position for Head Coach Geoff Macdonald. She currently holds a No. 28 national ranking. VU freshman Taka Bertrand drew Clemson’s No. 2 Julie Coin for her First Round showdown. In early action, the SEC Freshman of the Year led Coin, 4-1 but Clemson’s top player fought back to capture the first set, 6-4. Bertrand took a 2-1 advantage in the second frame, but Coin proved too strong, taking the second set, 6-2 to claim the matchup. For her efforts in 2005, Bertrand was also honored as the ITA’s Southeast Region Rookie Player of the Year. The Great Falls, Va. native garnered a combined record of 40-13 in just her first season on West End. Singles, First Round #12 Kristi Miller (GA.
