Svicarovich Rallies at NCAA Golf

5/19/2005

SUNRIVER, Ore. – Vanderbilt’s Kristen Svicarovich rebounded Wednesday with an even par 71 to storm back into the top tier of individuals at the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships.

“Kristen played very well all day,” says Coach Martha Richards Freitag. “She played composed golf and missed very few shots all day. One of her bogeys was a tough-luck three putt when she actually had a 4-footer downhill for birdie. On her birdie at No. 5 she knocked it within inches of the hole, nearly making eagle. And she got up and down to save par on 16.”

The Vanderbilt sophomore is tied for 31st position at the midway point in the tournament. She started her day in 98th place after a first round 79. Only two players in the field of 126 had better rounds on the day.

The Hillsboro, Ore., product had a strikingly similar start at the recent NCAA East Regional in Gainesville, Fla. There Svicarovich opened with a seven –over par 77 and then proceeded to play the next 36 holes one-under par to qualify as an individual for these championships.

Kristen began her round late in the afternoon, teeing off on No. 10. She had bogey 5’s on No. 12 and No. 15 but came back on the front side with 3’s on the par 4 third and fifth holes.

Her strong round put her just six shots back of a quartet of leaders at two-over par. Pepperdine and Auburn are tied for the team lead at 18-over par. The tournament runs through Friday.
