Svicarovich Fires 76 at NCAA Golf

5/19/2005

SUNRIVER, Ore. – Vanderbilt sophomore Kristen Svicarovich shot five-over par 76 Thursday as she slipped back into a tie for 55th place at the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships. She is 13-over for the tournament.

As has been the case in her prior two rounds on the Meadows Course of the Sunriver Resort, Kristen negotiated the front side with relatively few problems. She made the turn at two-over par but ran into trouble with her short game on the back nine. She suffered bogeys on holes 11, 14, 15 and 18 against one birdie on the par four twelvth.

“Kristen is striking the ball extremely well,” Coach Martha Richards Freitag says. “The greens are very slick and she had 3 putts for bogey on both 11 and 18 while on No. 14 she just missed a 4-footer for par. But she hardly made a ball striking mistake and really didn’t putt poorly except for those lapses. She is really representing Vanderbilt well at this tournament and I am very proud of her play.”

To illustrate her woes with the back nine, Svicarovich has bogeyed the par 4 15th each of her three rounds and she is three-over on the 18th and plus-two on the llth.

The weather has been a factor. Tuesday’s opening round was played in temperatures that dipped into the 40’s. Svicarovich played a brief portion of her even-par Wednesday round in rain and Thursday players were still wearing stocking caps and rain gear in damp, blustery conditions.

The tournament is being televised by the Golf Channel and live stats are found on golfstat.com.

Svicarovich tees off Friday at 12:20 PDT (2:20 Central).
