Women’s Soccer 2005 Schedule Presents Challenges 5/18/2005 Matches against traditional powers Denver, Colorado and Washington State as well as six Southeastern Conference home contests highlight the 2005 Vanderbilt Women’s Soccer schedule announced Wednesday. “We’re very excited about our schedule,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill said. “It will be a great challenge and will give us experience against many different teams and athletes from across the country that have competed at the highest level.” The Commodores will open the season at 2004 NCAA Tournament participant Colorado on Aug. 26 before traveling to Denver to battle the Pioneers on Aug. 28. Denver has taken part in three of the last four NCAA College Cups. “We’ve got a great trip to the state of Colorado to open the season,” Hill said. “Both Colorado and Denver are nationally ranked programs. Along with adjusting to the altitude, the trip will be a good indicator of how our young team will react.” Vanderbilt plays its home opener against Francis Marion on Sept. 2 before taking on Washington State on Sept. 4. The Cougars have reached the NCAA College Cup twice in the last five years. Other non-conference tilts include road games at Middle Tennessee (Sept. 9) and UAB (Sept. 11) and home contests with Morehead State (Sept. 15) and Samford (Sept. 18). Vanderbilt begins the Southeastern Conference portion of its schedule by playing host to Arkansas on Sept. 23 and LSU on Sept. 25. Other league games at home include Tennessee (Oct. 14), Georgia (Oct. 16), Mississippi State (Oct. 21) and the regular-season finale against Kentucky (Oct. 28). Road league games include stops at Auburn (Sept. 30), Alabama (Oct. 1), South Carolina (Oct. 7), Florida (Oct. 9) and Ole Miss (Oct. 23). “We’re going to see a very strong conference from top to bottom this coming season.” Hill said. “The league has a lot of parity.” The Commodores finished the 2004 season 7-7-5 after reaching the semifinals of the SEC Tournament for the first time since the 2000 campaign. Vanderbilt home games are played in the Vanderbilt Soccer Stadium. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children. |
