Dores Take Series At Kentucky 5/15/2005 Sunday, May 15 Commodores and Wildcats Play Two Seven-Inning Double Headers Sunday Vanderbilt Defeats Kentucky in Extra Innings toTake Series, 2-1 Game Two: Vanderbilt 11, Kentucky 7 Lexington, Ky. — The Vanderbilt Commodores scored four runs in the top of the ninth and Cody Crowell pitched a hitless final inning helping lead Vanderbilt to a 11-7 victory over Kentucky Sunday to take the series from the Wildcats. The teams were forced to play two seven-inning games Sunday due to severe thunderstorms in the Lexington area Saturday. With the score tied at 7-7 at the end of eight innings, Mike Baxter hit the game-winning RBI single to right field scoring Alex Feinberg who reached on a single. Brian Hernandez’s three-run home run added insurance runs for the Commodores scoring Baxter and Antoan Richardson for an 11-7 lead. Vanderbilt took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Feinberg singled to right field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Richardson. Baxter singled through the right side scoring Feinberg. Hernandez hit his first of two homeruns in the game — a solo shot to right field – to give the Commodores a two-run advantage. Kentucky tied the game in its half of the inning when Anton DeJesus scored on a Shaun Lehmann single to centerfield that Richardson couldn’t scoop up. JP Lowen hit an RBI single up the middle scoring Lehmann for the 2-2 tie. The Commodores got out of a bases loaded no out situation in the second stranding all of the UK runners. Billy Grace singled to lead off the inning and moved to second when Ryan Wilkes drew a walk. Jesse Barber reached when Baxter couldn’t hold on to a throw from David Price. With bases loaded and no outs, Antone DeJesus hit a pop up just over Baxter’s head at first base and from his knees, Baxter threw out Grace at home for the force out. Lehmann then flew out to centerfield and Richardson caught Grace out at third when he didn’t tag the base. The Wildcats took a 5-2 lead in the third inning. John Shelby led off the third inning with a hit to center and moved to third on a single by JP Lowen. Michael Bertman reached on a perfectly laid bunt down the first base line and just beat the throw scoring Shelby for a 3-2 UK lead. Grace drew a walk to load the bases. Wilkes singled to left field scoring Lowen for a 4-2 UK lead. Michael Wagner replaced Price on the mound and gave up a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Barber scoring Bertrum. He struck out Lehman to end the inning. Wagner retired 12 consecutive batters before Lehmann would reach on an error to begin the seventh inning. The Commodores took a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning scoring four runs. Warner Jones led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a single by de la Osa through the right side. Garza loaded the bases when he hit a single off the left centerfield wall. With no outs, Matt Zeller hit a shot that went off the top of the shortstops glove scoring Jones and de la Osa. Taylor hit through the left side scoring Garza to tie the game at 5-5. Craig Snipp replaced starter Andrew Albers on the mound and gave up a sacrifice fly to Feinberg scoring Zeller for a 6-5 lead. Baxter hit a one out home run in the seventh to extend the lead to two, 7-5. The Wildcats scored two runs in seventh inning to tie the game at 7-7 and send the game to extra innings. Lehmann reached on a throwing error by de la Osa and moved to third on a John Shelby single to left field. Lowen doubled down the right field line scoring Lehmann and moving Shelby to third. Bertram was intentionally walked and Matt Fritts popped up to Jones at second. Grace hit a long shot to left field, but Aaron Garza made a running catch into the fence for the second out allowing only Shelby to score. Wilkes struck out looking to end the inning. Trailing 11-7, the Wildcats put two men on base before Crowell entered the game and retired the side stranding the Kentucky runners. Price went 2.1 innings and gave up five runs on nine hits. Wagner (3-0) went 5.2 innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits in the win striking out five. Crowell earned his second save of the season. Kentucky used six pitchers who gave up 11 runs on 16 hits. Baxter was 3-5 with three RBI, while Hernandez was 2-5 with four RBI, including the two home runs. Game One: Kentucky 6, Vanderbilt 5 Lexington, Ky — Ryan Wilkes hit a bases loaded RBI single to centerfield and drove in the game-winning run in the seventh inning in Kentucky’s 6-5 come-from-behind win over Vanderbilt Sunday in the first game of the double-header. Mike Baxter hit a solo homerun over right field in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 5-5. Vanderbilt was leading 4-1 in the sixth inning before Kentucky scored four runs to take a 5-4 lead in its half of the sixth inning. JP Lowen led off the inning with a double and moved to third when Matt Zeller bobbled the relay from Antoan Richardson in right field. With one away, reliever Matt Buschmann walked Wilkes and Jesse Barber to load the bases. Stephen Shao relieved Matt Buschmann on the mound and gave up a two-run double to Antoan DeJesus off the right field wall cutting the VU lead to one, 4-3. Jeff Sues replaced Shao and Shaun Lehman reached base when the ball bounced over shortstop Dominic de la Osa’s glove scoring DeJesus and Barber for the 5-4 UK lead. Kentucky took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when JP Lowen hit his third homerun of the season when it bounced off the top of the fence in left center field. Justin Scutchfield walked and moved to third when DeJesus singled to deep shortstop. Lehmann walked to load the bases and Buschmann came in to relieve starter Ryan Mullins. Buschmann struck out UKs leading hitter John Shelby looking to strand the bases loaded. The Commodores tied the game in the third inning at 1-1 when Brian Hernandez hit an RBI double off the scoreboard in right field scoring Mike Baxter who reached after he was hit by a pitch. de la Osa began the fourth inning with a single to right field and moved to second on a ground out to second by Aaron Garza. Zeller grounded out to first moving de la Osa to third. Rucker Taylor took the first pitch and singled just to the right of the shortstop scoring de la Osa giving the Commodores a 2-1 lead. The Commodores took a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning. De la Osa hit a standup double down the left field line and stole third. Garza was intentionally walked and with runners at first and third, Zeller hit an RBI single through the right side giving the Commodores a 3-1 lead. Garza and Zeller both advanced when starting pitcher Aaron Tennyson overthrew second on a failed pickoff attempt. Taylor was intentionally walked to load the bases. Brock Baber relieved Tennyson on the mound to face Alex Feinberg who hit a grounder to shortstop scoring Garza. Commodore starter Ryan Mullins went 1.2 innings giving up one run on three hits. He struck out one and walked four. Buschmann retired seven batters before allowing a walk. He pitched 3.2 innings giving up three runs on one hit striking out three and walking four. Shao gave up one one run on one hit, while Sues — who picked up the loss – pitched the final .2 inning giving up one run on three hits. Brock Baber went 1.2 innings allowing one run on one hit in the win. |
