VU Chosen for NCAA Men’s Golf Regional Field

5/9/2005

Vanderbilt has been selected to participate in the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals for the third consecutive year announced by the NCAA Monday afternoon. The Commodores will play May 19-21 at the East Regional, hosted this year by the Southeastern Conference at the Golf Club of Tennessee.  There are three regions — East, Central and West — with 27 teams per region.  The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships.

Vanderbilt has experienced recent success in post-season play.  A year ago, the Commodores finished ninth at the East Regional and placed 28th at the NCAA Championships.  Of that team, all five Commodores returned this season including Lance Goodson, Luke List, Mark Donnell, Ben McClung and Will Armstrong.

Ten teams from the Southeastern Conference have been selected to compete in the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals. In the East Regional, hosted by the Southeastern Conference at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Nashville, there are five SEC teams – Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama and Vanderbilt.  The Bulldogs are the top seed in the regional while the Gators are the third seed, Vols are the sixth seed, Crimson Tide are the eighth seed and the Commodores are the 18th of the 27 teams seeded in the regional.  Ole Miss’ Jordan Dempsey and Mississippi State’s Joe Deraney were also selected to participate in the East Regional.

In the Central Regional, hosted by the University of Notre Dame, there are two SEC teams – fourth-seeded Kentucky and 18th-seeded Arkansas.  Oklahoma State is the top seed in the Central followed by Augusta State and Texas Christian University.

In the West Regional, hosted by Stanford University, there are three SEC teams – third-seeded Auburn, eighth-seeded South Carolina and 11th-seeded LSU.  UNLV is the top seed in the West followed by New Mexico.

The championships will be conducted June 1-4 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland. Loyola College (Maryland) is the host institution for this year’s championships. Three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine regions, will be conducted May 19-21. A total of 27 teams and six individuals not on selected teams were assigned to each regional site.

Ten teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals.
