Bertrand, Fish Honored by ITA

5/9/2005 Freshman Taka Bertrand was named ITA Rookie Player of the Year and sophomore Amanda Fish was named ITA Player to Watch for the southeast region as announced by the ITA on Monday.

Bertrand starred at the No. 3 position of the Commodores, posting an impressive overall record of 18-6, including an 8-3 mark in SEC play.

The Great Falls, Va. native clinched perhaps the Dores biggest win of the year on the road against No. 2 Kentucky.  Down 5-4 in the decisive third set, the VU rookie held serve and then broke her opponent to take a 6-5 advantage.  VU’s No. 58 served out the match and clinched the triumph for the Dores.

For her efforts, Bertrand was also named Second Team All-SEC in both singles and doubles.

In 2005, Fish amassed a team-high 21 wins in just her second season on West End.  The sophomore from Scituate, Mass. also posted an unbelievable record in SEC action, going 11-0 at the second slot for the Dores while garnering First Team All-SEC accolades.

Fish has captured 16 of her last 18 outings and currently boasts a No. 28 national ranking.

Fish also partnered with Bertrand in the doubles draw to go 19-6, 8-2 SEC at the No. 2 position while earning Second Team All-SEC honors.

Both Bertrand and Fish were also selected to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships held May 23-28 in Athens, Ga.
