Svicarovich Qualifies for NCAA Golf; VU 11th

5/7/2005

GAINESVILLE, FL—Vanderbilt’s Kristen Svicarovich shot even par Saturday at the NCAA East Regional to qualify for the NCAA Golf Championship but her Commodore team finished 11th and missed the cut.  Ohio State beat No. 1 rated Duke by six strokes to claim the team title with the top eight teams and two low individuals not a member of those teams advancing.

Svicarovich opened the 54-hole tournament with a seven-over par 77 but proceeded to cover the next 36 holes in one-under par.  She birdied the par 3 second hole and the par 4 18th to offset a pair of bogeys on the front side Saturday.  She finished the tournament at six-over par, good for ninth place.  She now goes to the NCAA Championship, held Sunriver, Ore., which is her home state.

Her teammates didn’t fare quite so well.  Chris Brady added a 74 to prior 75-71 efforts and ended up at plus-10, tied for 17th and just missing being the second low individual qualifier for the finals.  Her final round consisted of two-over par tours of each side, including a bogey at the 18th.  She missed falling into a tie for the second qualifying position by one stroke.

Freshman Liebelei Lawrence toured the University of Florida Golf Course in 77 today but classmates Julie Bartholomew struggled from a second round 76 to a closing 84 and Helen-Rose Richards added a final 87.

Duke’s Anna Grzebien fired a closing 67 to win individual honors by one shot over Furman’s Jenny Suh and Virginia’s Leah Wigger.  Grzebien was one-under for the 54-holes.

Svicarovich has already played the Sunriver Resort-Meadows course. Last September the Commdores opened their season at the NCAA Preview Tournament where Kristen shot 72-74-70-216 (+3) to lead her team, despite being under the weather at the time.
