Walkoff Homerun Leads Georgia Over Vanderbilt 5/6/2005 Georgia’s Joey Side Hits Walkoff Homerun in Ninth to Defeat Vanderbilt Friday, May 6, 2005
Athens, Ga. — Joey Side hit a walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Georgia Bulldogs to a 4-3 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores Friday at Foley Field. Georgia is now 24-20, 8-13 in SEC play, while Vanderbilt is 29-15, 10-12 in league action.
With the score tied at three, Side — the leadoff batter — took a 1-0 pitch off VU reliever Stephen Shao over the right centerfield wall for the win.
The Commodores tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth inning when Brian Hernandez hit a bases loaded ground out to second scoring Aaron Garza. Garza led off the inning with a single through the left side off Georgia starter Michael Hyle. Will Startup then entered the game for the Bulldogs and with one away, gave up a single to Warner Jones moving Garza to second. Mike Baxter drew a walk to load the bases for Hernandez.
Georgia took a 3-2 lead after scoring two runs in the seventh inning. Josh Morris led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second when Jason Jacobs drew a walk off Commodore starter Jensen Lewis. With two away, Adam McDaniel hit a grounder to Dominic de la Osa at shortstop who tried to beat out Jacobs at second for the unassisted force out, but Jacobs reached safely allowing Morris to score to tie the game at 2-2. Shao entered the game for Lewis and gave up a single to Matthew Dunn scoring Jackobs. Shao struck out Bobby Felmy to end the inning the Bulldogs ahead 3-2.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the second inning when Joey Side scored on a sacrifice fly by Derek Smith. Side reached base on a walk and moved to third on a bunt and throwing error by Lewis.
Vanderbilt tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning. Alex Feinberg reached on an error by second baseman Jason Jacobs to lead off the inning and moved to second when Antoan Richardson ducked a tag by the first baseman after a bunt. Matt Zeller walked to load the bases. With one away, Shao hit a ground out to second scoring Feinberg to tie the game. Lewis went 6.2 innings giving up three runs on four hits in the no decision. He struck out two and walked two. Shao picked up the loss (3-2) giving up the one run on three hits. He struck out two batters.
Georgia’s Will Startup earned his fifth win of the season going the final 2.0 innings giving up two hits.
Georgia outhit Vanderbilt 7-6. Six different Commodores collected a hit and Shao totaled two RBI in the contest. Vanderbilt committed three errors in the game, while Georgia had two errors.
Game Two is scheduled for Saturday at 4 pm ET on FOX Sports. Ryan Mullins is on the mound for the Commodores.
