Vandy Eighth at NCAA Women’s Golf Regional 5/6/2005 GAINESVILLE, FLA – Kristen Svicarovich and Chris Brady led a second round Vanderbilt surge as the Commodores climbed back into contention to make the cut for the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship at the NCAA Women’s Golf East Regional here Friday. The Commodores recovered from an opening round 15th position to finish in an eighth place tie with Campbell with 18 holes remaining. The top eight teams and top two individuals not members of those eight schools advance to the NCAA Championships May 17-20 in Sunriver, Oregon. Rain wiped out Thursday’s scheduled opening round so the teams played two rounds today. Vanderbilt shot 15 shots better during their second tour of Florida’s University Golf Course, jumping to 292 after an opening 307. Svicarovich had a splendid one-under 69 over her second round. The Hillsboro, Oregon sophomore began on No. 11 with the shotgun start and notched birdies on No. 12 and No. 16 before rattling off 10 straight pars. Brady finished her second round with two birdies to end up at 71. She had four bogeys and three birdies. Freshman Liebelei Lawrence also improved in the afternoon with a 76. She finished bogey-bogey or otherwise would have enjoyed her best competitive round in two months. Ohio State led the 21-team field nearly the entire day. The Buckeyes had rounds of 285-280 for a five-over par total and a 10-shot lead over second place Duke. There is a logjam from places three to seven. Individually, Leah Wigger of Virginia stands at three-under par 137 to lead Furman’s by one shot. Vanderbilt, the 13th seed, was 15th after the morning round with a 27-over total of 307. Brady led the way for VU with a 75, followed by 77’s by Svicarovich and Lawrence and a 78 by Bartholomew. Richards shot a non-scoring 80 in her first round. However, fortunes changed in the afternoon. On the power of their two sophomores, the Commodores bolted past six teams. Brady and Svicarovich are now tied for 15th on the leader board, six-over par.
