David Price Invited To 2005 USA Baseball National Team Trials

Vanderbilt freshman left hander David Price (6-6, Murfreesboro, Tenn.) has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2005 USA Baseball National Team Trials. Price has worked himself into the starting weekend rotation this season (Sunday starter) and hs made 13 appearances, including seven starts. He has pitched 54.0 innings and has given up 17 runs (15 earned) on 35 hits. He has struck out 76 and walked 25. Opposing batters own a .186 batting average against him.

Price is the sixth Commodore to participate in USA Baseball. Last season, left-handed pitcher Ryan Mulins played on the 2004 Summer team and was one of five pitchers who combined to throw the first no-hitter in USA Baseball recorded history (since 1984). Junior second baseman Warner Jones was invited to the National Team Tryouts (2004). Left-handed pitcher Jeremy Sowers helped lead the USA Junior National Team to a silver medal in 2001 registering a 3-0 record and 0.00 ERA with 28 strikeouts and eight walks limiting the opponents to a .148 batting average. Mark Prior was a member of the 1999-00 USA National Team, while Matt Kata was a member of the USA Junior National Team in 1996. Head Coach Tim Corbin served as an assistant coach on the 2000 USA National Gold Medal Team while he was at Clemson.

Durham, North Carolina – USA Baseball announced today a list of 13 collegiate players that have accepted invitations to participate in the 2005 USA Baseball National Team Trials – to be held June 27-30 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The USA Baseball National Team will be selected from a pool of 36 players, of which an additional 23 have yet to be determined. The official 20-man team roster will be announced on July 1. One player from the 2004 USA Baseball National Team has accepted the invitation as a sophomore to again vie for one of 20 roster spots on Team USA: Drew Stubbs – an outfielder at the University of Texas from Atlanta, Texas. One other player – lefthanded pitcher Nate Boman at the University of San Diego – was invited to the trials, but will be unable to attend due to injury.

“The National Team is defined by athlete performance in the college game,” said USA Baseball General Manager of National Teams Eric Campbell. “This short list of invitees to the trials represents non-draft eligible players who’s 2005 performance on the field has warranted an invite to the trials. This is a great group of players.” USA Baseball will announce a second list of invitees to the trials in late May, and a final list of invitees in June.
The 2005 USA Baseball National Team will participate in the 34th Annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate Championship Series in Japan, July 8-12 and a Friendship Series vs. Taiwan in Chinese Taipei, July 15-19 prior to returning home to play six exhibition games at Durham Bulls Athletic Park this summer, July 22-24 & July 29-31. USA Baseball will announce a full National Team game schedule at a later date.

Baylor’s Steve Smith will serve as the Field Manager for Team USA. He will be assisted by John Cohen of Kentucky, Dave Van Horn of Arkansas, and Rob Walton of Oral Roberts. Andrew Norden of Duke will serve as the team athletic trainer and Larry Little of Baylor will serve as the team press officer.
