Nashville, Tenn. — Right fielder Nick Stavinoha went 4-5 at the plate and helped lead the #9 LSU Tigers to a 9-3 victory over Vanderbilt in the second game of a double header at Hawkins Field. Vanderbilt won the first game, 9-4. Stavinoha was a triple away from the cycle with two singles, a double (18) and a homerun (12). Clay Dirks went 6.1 innings in the win (9-1) giving up three runs (one earned) on eight hits. He struck out five.

LSU scored three runs in the first inning. Chris Jackson was hit by a pitch and scored when Jordan Mayer hit a double down the left field line. Mayer moved to third on a wild pitch by VU starter Ryan Mullins and scored with Ryan Patterson doubled down the left field line. Patterson moved to third on a ground out by Nick Stavinoha and scored on a sacrifice fly by Will Harris.

LSU added one in the third inning. Patterson led off the inning with a single over the shortstop and moved to third on a single by Stavinoha. Clay Harris hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Patterson for a 4-0 Tiger lead. Michael Wagner replaced Mullins on the mound and forced Will Harris to pop out and struck out Quinn Stewart to end the inning.

The Commodores got on the board in the third inning scoring two runs. Antoan Richardson reached on a throwing error by Dirks. Rucker Taylor singled to right center for the first Commodore hit of the game moving Richardson to third. Alex Feinberg singled to left field scoring Richardson and moving Taylor to third. Taylor scored when Warner Jones grounded out to third.

Dustin Weaver walked to lead off the fourth inning and moved to second on a ground out by Michael Hollander. With two away, Mayer reached on a throwing error by Feinberg. Baxter’s throw to home was wide and rolled to the backstop allowing Weaver to score and moving Mayer second. Patterson popped up to end the inning.

Mayer hit a single through the left side to start the seventh inning and was replaced by Bryan Harris as a pinch runner. Stavinoha doubled to left moving Harris to third. Clay Harris hit a two-RBI single up the middle and the Commodores replaced Wagner with Matt Buschmann. Buschmann retired the next two batters to end the two-run Tiger inning.

In the Commodore half of the seventh, Richardson hit a high chopper to third and outran the throw. He moved to second on a Taylor deep fly out to centerfield. Feinberg got his second RBI on the day when his single to center scored Richardson. Jason Determann took the mound for the Tigers and gave up a single to Warner Jones before forcing Baxter to fly out and striking out Hernandez.

LSU added one run in the eighth and ninth innings for a 9-3 score. Bruce Sprowl reached on a single and scored on a Chris Jackson single in the eighth. Stavinoha hit a solo homerun with one away in the ninth.

Edgar Ramirez pitched the final inning for the Tigers. He walked Richardson but forced Taylor into a double play. After walking Feinberg, Ramirez forced Jones to fly out to right field to end the game.

Feinberg went 3-4 for the Commodores, followed by Taylor who was 2-5.

Mullins went 2.1 innings giving up four runs (all earned) on five hits. He struck out one and walked one. Wagner pitched 4.0 relief innings and gave up three runs on four hits while striking out one and walking two. Buschmann pitched the final 2.2 innings and gave up two runs (two earned) on three hits.

The third game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 pm CT. Freshman left-hander David Price is on the mound for the Commodores, while junior lefty Greg Smith is on the mound for the Tigers.
