Nashville, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt Commodores scored three runs in the second third and seventh innings to defeat #9 LSU 9-4 in the first game of a doubleheader at Charles Hawkins Field Saturday under cloudy skies. The game was postponed Friday night because of potential thunderstorms in the Nashville area.

Freshman shortstop Dominic de la Osa was 3-4 at the plate with three runs and three RBI in the contest.

The Commodores took a 3-0 lead in the second inning before recording an out. Mike Baxter drew a walk and moved to third on a Brian Hernandez single through the right side. Dominic de la Osa hit a RBI single up the middle scoring Baxter. Aaron Garza followed with a hit up the middle scoring Hernandez and de la Osa for a 3-0 lead.

LSU answered with two runs in the top of the third. With one away, Matt Liuzza drew a walk and moved to third when Derek Hebert doubled off the right field wall. Chris Jackson grounded out to second scoring Liuzza and moving Hebert to third. Hebert scored on a wild pitch to narrow the VU lead to one, 3-2.

Vanderbilt answered in its half of the inning with three runs. With two away, Baxter singled and moved to second when Hernandez drew a walk. De la Osa singled through the right side scoring Baxter and moving Hernandez to third. Aaron Garza loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Bill Kleinschrodt drew a walk on a full count scoring Hernandez. Antoan Richardson reached when he was hit by a pitch scoring de la Osa. Eric English replaced Lane Mestepey on the mound for the Tigers and recorded the final out of the inning.

With two away, Ryan Patterson hit a solo homerun over the centerfield wall for LSU’s third run of the game in the sixth inning.

LSU’s Will Harris led off the seventh inning with a standup double down the left field line and scored when Liuzza doubled to the same place. Sophomore lefthander Stephen Shao replaced Jensen Lewis and forced pinch hitter Quinn Stewart to pop up and struck out Chris Jackson to end the inning

Vanderbilt extended its lead to five in the seventh inning. With one away, Baxter singled and stole second. Hernandez drew a walk and Jordan Faircloth replaced Eric English on the mound. De la Osa took the first pitch down the left field line for a double that scored Baxter and moved Hernandez to third. Aaron Garza was intentionally walked to load the bases for pinch hitter Matt Zeller. Zeller answered with a two-RBI single to right field for a 9-4 Vanderbilt lead.

Jensen Lewis won a career-high seventh game and is 7-2 on the year. He went 6.1 innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits. He struck out seven and walked one. Stephen Shao earned his second save of the season pitching 2.2 scoreless innings allowing just two hits. He struck out two.

Mestepey is now 5-6 going 2.2 innings giving up six runs (all earned) on five hits. He struck out two and walked three.

Both teams totaled eight hits. De la Osa totaled three, followed by Baxter with two. Patterson and Stavinoha each totaled two hits in the contest.

Vanderbilt is now 29-12, 10-9 in the SEC, while LSU owns a 29-14 overall record, 10-9 in SEC action.
