Vanderbilt Chosen for NCAA Women’s Golf Field

4/26/2005

For the sixth consecutive year, Vanderbilt has been selected to participate in the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship. The field was announced by the NCAA Monday afternoon.

The Commodores will play May 5-7 at the East Regional, hosted this year by the University of Florida.  There are three regions — East, Central and West — with 21 teams per region.  The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships.

“We are very excited to be selected for NCAA play,” says head coach Martha Richards Freitag.  “We played a very difficult schedule to prepare for this opportunity — it has been rated as the third toughest schedule in the nation — and that may have been a factor in our seeding.

“It will be good to play at Florida,” Freitag continued, “because we have familiarity with the University Golf Club; we play there every year in the Suntrust Lady Gator. Once you get into this NCAA field, good things can happen.”

Vanderbilt has experienced recent success in post-season play.  A year ago, a seasoned Commodore unit won the East Regional and placed fifth at the NCAA Championships.  Of that team, only sophomores Kristen Svicarovich and Chris Brady returned this year to join four freshmen: Liebelei Lawrence, Julie Bartholomew, Devon Unkeless and Helen-Rose Richards.

Nine members of the powerful Southeastern Conference were selected to compete.
