VU Trips Ole Miss in SEC Quarters, 4-2

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 4 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team captured the doubles point and three singles matches to knock off No. 38 Ole Miss, 4-2 in the quarterfinal round of the SEC Tournament.

“It was really windy out there today and I thought Ole Miss played very well?the match was very close,” said Vanderbilt Head Coach Geoff Macdonald. “The SEC Tournament is a tough arena with the best teams in the country. We did a great job in doubles and we had some big wins in singles. Anytime you make the semis of the SEC Tournament?Wow! We are looking forward to a great matchup with Florida tomorrow.”

VU’s No. 1 combination of Audra Falk and Amanda Taylor dropped UM’s duo of Chloe Carlotti and Virginia Tomatis by an 8-3 count to claim the first doubles matchup of the afternoon.

The Commodore combo of Taka Bertrand and Amanda Fish provided the clinching win at the second slot where they notched their 19th win of the year. Bertrand and Fish defeated UM’s Ilona Somers and Mimi Renaudin, 8-5.

The Rebels evened the score in the singles draw as No. 50 Carlotti upset VU’s No. 11 Falk, 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 1 position.

At the second spot, VU’s No. 29 Fish garnered her 21st win of the year as she knocked off UM’s No. 72 Nika Koukhartchouk in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.

VU’s Taylor pushed the Commodore lead to 3-1 with her convincing win at the No. 4 slot, 6-3, 6-2. With the win, the Commodore rookie improves her 2005 singles record to 19-5.

At the third position, Somers brought the Rebels to within one point of the Commodores at 3-2, with her three set win over VU’s Bertrand, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.

Vanderbilt freshman Caroline Ferrell provided the clinching match at the No. 6 position, where she outlasted Preethi Subramanian in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.

In the match at No. 5, Vanderbilt Menees led her opponent, 1-0 in the decisive third set before play was halted.

With the win, the Commodores move into a semifinal showdown with No. 8 Florida tomorrow, April 23. The matchup is slated for 1:00 p.m. CT.
